Delays in Children

What Is a Language Delay?

A language delay refers to a delay in the development of a child’s ability to understand and/or use spoken language. Some children struggle to process what others are saying (receptive language), while others have difficulty expressing their own thoughts and ideas (expressive language). In many cases, children may experience challenges in both areas.

Language delays can make it harder for children to follow directions, engage in conversation, or express basic needs. These difficulties can affect learning, social interactions, and self-esteem if not addressed early. With the right support, children can make meaningful progress and develop the language tools they need to thrive.

Expressive vs. Receptive Language Delay

 Expressive Language Delay

Children with expressive language delays may understand what’s said to them, but they have trouble putting words together or using age-appropriate vocabulary, grammar, or sentence structure. They may speak in shorter phrases, struggle with verb tenses, or find it hard to name objects or describe events.

Receptive Language Delay

Children with receptive delays often find it difficult to process what others are saying. They may have trouble following directions, answering questions, or grasping the meaning of spoken language, even if their hearing is typical. Receptive challenges can impact attention, behavior, and classroom participation.

How We Help Children with Language Delays

At Talk Time Telehealth in New Jersey, we provide targeted, one-on-one online speech therapy to support both receptive and expressive language development. Our sessions are play-based, goal-oriented, and individualized for each child’s needs.

We start with a thorough language evaluation to understand your child’s strengths and challenges. From there, we build a therapy plan that may focus on vocabulary expansion, sentence formulation, question answering, following directions, and story retelling—depending on your child’s needs.

Therapists use interactive materials from Boom Cards, Ultimate SLP, and Teachers Pay Teachers to keep sessions fun and functional. We also provide monthly progress updates and optional activities for carryover at home, so parents are part of the process every step of the way.

Signs Your Child May Have a Language Delay

If your child is experiencing any of the following, a language delay could be present:

  • Difficulty putting thoughts into words

  • Trouble following directions

  • Limited vocabulary for their age

  • Delayed sentence development

  • Difficulty answering questions or retelling stories

  • Frustration when trying to communicate

Early identification and therapy can make a significant difference in your child’s communication and confidence.
